PARK: PARKed In, UQ (Group 8)

Group 8 - UQ Architecture
Staff House Rd, St Lucia

"Parked In"
Our scheme is based on the impact of vehicles on social experience and movement within the city. The patterns of movement and social spaces are constricted by the infrastructure grid created by vehicular movement. We constructed frames with fabric panels that represent the social barriers created by use of cars. The panels restrict movement and the visual link between the adjacent spaces. The fabric panels are green material and calico. Various images of a diverse Brisbane City have been transferred onto the calico side of the panel. These images engage visitors, encouraging them to walk between the frames and outline our social statement regarding cars within the city. We spray painted letters on the reverse side of the panels. Frames are removed individually and the fabric panels are laid on the ground so at the end of the day the car space is entirely green and spells out the phrase "Embrace It". The car park changes from an installation that surrounds the viewer and engulfs them, to a project that is viewed from above and allows free movement. The act of taking down the frames represents the deconstruction of the social barriers created by cars within the city.

PARK: The HOB (Group 12)

"The H.O.B" by Group 12 UQ Architecture
Sir William Macgregor Drive, St Lucia

HOB. The PARK is about a city vision that is hybrid, open and balanced. We don't want to get rid of private transport and make the city completely green but have a balance between green space and industrial space. This is expressed through a design which consists of three levels. The first representing the main arteries of travel in which the city should have a balance of public and private transport. The second level represents green space throughout our cities, which concentrates more on an experience for pedestrians and bike riders. The Third level represents an emphasis on architectural built form, which will complement the green spaces and bring it together as a whole.

PARK: Time (Group 10), UQ

"Reminder of Time" by Group 10, UQ Architecture
Staff House Rd, St Lucia

STOP-SIT-VIEW- take some time to look at your surroundings, aware of the
greenery and enjoy the beauty of nature.

There are many mysteries in nature that can intrigue and surprise. In modern life we don’t take the time to be curious or to marvel at environment around us. To be captivated‚ our attention seems to require either a high level of shock or a sensational‚ easily conveyed experience. We have become indifferent to the existence of all things around us. The fast pace of today’s life makes us blind to nature's aesthetic sensations.

Do we ever stop to consider the wonder of being a part of the environment? Here, it is a place to take time. Time to have a chat. Time to appreciate the wonderful views that open up every corner. So, STOP, SIT and VIEW

The concept of 'clock face' symbolizes time and the 'clock hands' pointing out to the interesting spot that people might not aware all this time as well as providing seats for the visitors.

PARK: State of Emergency (Group 4), UQ

State of Emergency: The Human Touch Lost
Group 4 (UQ Architecture)
Union Complex, St Luscia

Our group’s view is that our urban cities have been dominated by the car as buildings and public spaces are limited to make way for roads for vehicles. Within the confines of the car, humans have lost the utilisation of our primary senses to feel the urban spaces we inhabit and move through. We feel that there really is a “State of Emergency”: not only have humans lost the ability to navigate through our cities by our senses without the interference of the car, the cities themselves are cold landscapes designed for the car – the human touch is lost. Our PARK, on Site 4, represents barricading out the rigidity of the vehicular system and moving towards a better future where spaces are less rigid and are more welcoming to the human and the human touch. The use of sandbags with different materials within them not only evoke the idea of the state of emergency we are currently in, but also invite occupants of the space to touch the built environment as the space moves from the carpark to nature beyond.

PARK: Wights at Grays Rd, Gaythorne

Wally, Andrew, Alex and Doris
Grays Rd, Gaythorne.

The PARK(ing) space in front or our house was turfed. We had a small table and several folding deck chairs, and a lamp ... and fairy lights in the tree next to it.

We did get a very positive response from passing pedestrians! We had mostly immediate neighbours attend and in the process, we met two sets of new neighbours that we hadn't had the opportunity to meet before! Nobody got run over - nobody even got hurt! Lots of yummy food! A good time was had by all!

PARK: 100:1 by Group 19, UQ

"100:1" by Group 19 (UQ Architecture)
Staff House Rd, St Lucia UQ

"100:1" As university students studying architecture we are constantly made aware of the environment and the impact that the modern built environment has and will have on it. It is therefore our aim to draw attention to nature by magnifying it to a scale where it can't be ignored. In doing so we will be transforming this small pedestrian unfriendly piece of land into a useable architectural space for the public.

PARK: Art PARK by Wandering Room, West End

Wandering Room (artist run collective)
Russell St, West End

‘Art Park’ was a rotating, temporary art gallery for 6 artists. The art works were all of a performative nature e.g. in costume or including sound in approximately 1& ½ hr timeslots. Between 4:30 and 5pm, the ‘after party’ was staged in the space where guests arrived for non-alcoholic beverages, cheese and crackers aka ‘opening night’ (or in our case ‘closing afternoon’) nibbles.

PARK: Boat by Hassell Young Designers Group

Hassell Young Designers Group
Edward St, CBD

YDG collectively came up with the idea of ‘parking’ a hand-built boat. The objective was to encourage the community to think about what else a parking space could be used for. By challenging the perception of what a park is, the YDG considered the amount of space that is allocated to the Brisbane River and created the paper boat which was inspired by the following elements:
• Public Art
• Urban Design
• Land Use
• Brisbane - River City
• Education
• Sustainability

The design brief ensured that the installation was:
• Eye catching + interesting
• Moveable - to respect 1 hr time limits for metered parking
• Interactive + evocative
• And to challenge people to think about what else a car space can be used for

The larger boat contained mini origami boats which acted as a kind of SOS message containing eco-living and parking day facts to inform and educate the community.

The process was not without its challenges but it was a terrific result thanks to all who made the day possible and dedicated a lot of time (both inside and outside of working hours) to this event.

PARK: "Block Park-ing" (Group 14), UQ

"Block Park-ing" by (Group 14), UQ Architecture
Staff House Rd, St Lucia UQ

"Block Park-ing"
Using recycled material (milk crates), a structure was designed for site 14 with various heights and spaces to mimic the city building in a slight way. The concept or the idea trying to be put forward is that a car park space (approx 6m x 2.4m) is actually fairly large when it's occupied by people, we just don't realise this when a car takes up this space. Which also brings us to the question of what is "space" to people? How do they perceive their space? What would they do in their space? and what do they want their space to look like or arranged?

We have come up with using the simple geometric form of milk crates (cubes) to build (tied together by zip ties and covered) an un-restricted form (although some will be tied together so they cannot be moved or climbed on for safety reasons), with coloured coded cubes that can be stacked and removed, so that the people who come in can think about what kind of space they would like by moving the crates to create their own spaces and do what they like in that space. Whether its reading, resting, coffee break-ing, catching up, its something to experience and can only be enjoyed by themselves, without someone directing what their space has to look and feel like.

PARK: "Moments in a car park" (Group 5) UQ

"Moments in a car park" by Group 5 (UQ Architecture)
3 sites during the day
Parking complex on Walcott Street, St Lucia opposite playing field; Parking complex off Union Rd underneath the UQ centre; multi-storey parking complex on Sir William Mcgregor Dr, opposite UQ athletics ova

The city, in many ways, can be seen to be more of transition space than a space which people choose to occupy and experience. Many people drive through the city on their way to another place, or walk through on their way to work, rarely stopping to simply occupy the space and indulge in the city landscape. As such we chose to create a space where people can stop and reflect on their surroundings, a space to be occupied as opposed to moved through. A place where people can choose to occupy it as they will, but where they are still a part of the surrounding landscape.
