Talking Point (#9) Urban Agriculture

"Food in the City" appears as a outcome in the BCC Living in Brisbane 2026 Vision. "Food in the City" could be mistaken for dining out at a fancy restaurant, but it's actually about local food production. From backyard vegie gardens, farmers markets, community gardens, green roofs to even vertical farms in skyscrapers- it all adds to urban agriculture. The idea of food production contributes to the greening and environments of cities, and has broader benefits to health, lifestyle, community and economic development.

PARK(ing) Day started in 2005 as a temporary art project to raise awareness about the lack of green spaces in San Francisco’s downtown. It’s based on the idea that feeding a parking meter is like “renting” a space. But instead of parking car, why not park something better! Every September, people around the world are now transforming ‘car parks’ to ‘people parks’. These PARKs are fun and visual symbols of communities wanting to improve urban quality.
