The New York Department of Transport are supporting the PlaNYC sustainability plan by “creating or enhancing a public plaza in every community.” They establish plazas like PARK(ing) Day that are seemingly low cost and temporary (compared to other typical plazas). They use elements such as movable planters, tables and chairs, and one even has the painted green asphalt! I imagine that these spaces will eventually become permanently built spaces but even as temporary spaces they quickly work to meet community need and begin to shift the culture of the streets.
